Introduction to adolescent brain development with dr. dana dorfman

Click below to hear Dr. Dana Dorfman explain how the adolescent brain stores new information.

The adolescent brain is constantly improving its highway system:

  • Short-term memory has limited capacity. Redundant information is pruned, novel information stored.
  • The more the brain is stimulated, the stronger the synapses that comprise neural pathways.
  • Limbic (emotional) Center of the brain is still underdeveloped.

The adolescent doesn’t have the ability to organize, plan, process, and regulate emotions. This is where adults can provide structure, encourage mutual and creative problem solving, and help their teen increase blood flow to the frontal lobe to help this part of the brain develop.
